Launch of the “HoHoHo” Project - Rethinking Industrial Electricity

02/02/2026

High-voltage charging controller for flexible, manufacturer-independent self-power supply

The official kick-off event at TechBase Regensburg on January 14 marked the launch of the ZIM-funded collaborative project “HoHoHo – Open-Architecture, High-Efficiency, High-Voltage Charging Controller for Affordable Industrial Electricity.” The project partners, KooSys GmbH and the Wörth-Wiesent Technology Campus of the Deggendorf Institute of Technology (THD), both members of the Cluster Mobility & Logistics, are jointly developing a flexible key technology for the future of energy in industrial settings.

Flexible High-Voltage Charge Controller for Greater Energy Autonomy

The goal of the research project is to develop a universally applicable high-voltage charge controller that intelligently networks photovoltaic systems and battery storage units from different manufacturers - manufacturer-independent, DC-coupled, and not subject to curtailment by the grid operator. This will enable industrial customers for the first time to set up a modular, scalable, and cost-effective on-site power system that can be flexibly adapted to individual needs. In addition to affordable industrial power, the developed system offers free emergency power capability, which can be flexibly adjusted to the specific needs of the operation.

“Until now, the market has mostly offered only closed, all-in-one solutions. We, on the other hand, are developing a solution that can be configured independently of manufacturer ties - a true game-changer for industrial self-generation,” explains André Koos, Managing Director of KooSys GmbH and member of the advisory board of the Cluster Mobility & Logistics. KooSys GmbH is also a startup tenant at TechBase Regensburg.

Prof. Dr. Otto Kreutzer from the Wörth-Wiesent Technology Campus adds: “Our approach allows PV systems of any size to be combined with storage solutions and inverters from a wide variety of manufacturers. This creates real investment security and maximum flexibility.”

Innovation Impulse from the HY2.ZERO Network

The project idea originated within the “HY2.ZERO – Mobility Needs Hydrogen” innovation network managed by the Cluster Mobility & Logistics. From 2021 to 2024, the network brought together stakeholders from hydrogen technology, energy systems, and mobility solutions. The collaboration between KooSys and THD is an example of the lasting impact of this network.

Funding through the ZIM Program

“HoHoHo” is funded under the “Central Innovation Program for SMEs” (ZIM) of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE). The program, which is open to all technologies and industries, supports innovative projects by small and medium-sized enterprises in cooperation with research institutions. The project is scheduled to run from January 1, 2026, to June 30, 2028.
